事實上，國際足協（FIFA）去年同在美國上演的擴充版世界冠軍球會盃，已曾試行每場在比賽中途加設「補水暫停」，而今屆由美國、墨西哥和加拿大合辦的世界盃決賽周，則是首次國際大賽在全數賽事執行，分別在上半場的22分鐘，及下半場的67分鐘，分別各設一次3分鐘的「補水暫停」。
