國際政治一直有不同的說法，不過，美國重量級學者、攻勢現實主義（Offensive Realism）大師米爾斯海默（John Mearsheimer）表示，「（美國人）會為了保衛台灣而戰鬥和犧牲」，因為確保中國不會奪取台灣，對美國非常重要。

Beyond defensively reacting to perceived security threats in the region, it can be inferred that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine reflects a calculated strategy of offensive realism – persistent and opportunistic efforts to enhance its power economically and militarily to establish regional hegemony (Mearsheimer 2001).
