今次事故中，鼻胃喉管經支氣管進入肺部和胸腔內壁間的左胸膜腔內，鄧錦成說，胸膜腔正常只有很微量的胸膜液，但由於長期卧床，加上當時左肺患肺炎，導致左邊胸膜腔有胸膜積液，懷疑胸膜積液有感染，導致偏酸性，結果令抽液檢測出現不常見的「假陽性」結果。

The investigation found that after mistakenly placing the tube in the patient’s bronchus, the pH test showed no irregularity as the sample collected was a pleural effusion which gives the same acidity level as gastric acid.
