專家解釋應力轉移是指地震後的岩層就像搖搖板，當餘震集中在花蓮北邊會令南邊變得不穩定，累積更多能量，於是下一波餘震就發生在南邊，直至岩層兩邊的能量再次取得平衝。

The CWA says the aftershocks might be due to stress transfer, where the surrounding faults are affected by stress and rupture prematurely.
