薄荷是傳統常用的香草，雖然一般使用上屬於安全性高的草本，然而當中亦含有一定的副作用，例如很常見及成人或兒童都有機會使用的薄荷棒，當中所含的薄荷醇成分，能刺激皮膚神經末梢，令皮膚毛細血管擴張，以達到散熱，繼而產生冰涼舒適感覺，而且亦可令中樞神經感到興奮，使人感覺提神。
