水力壓裂的原理是將水、沙及化學物質混合而成的液體，經由地面高壓泵注入地底，從而壓裂頁岩層並釋放當中的天然氣或原油。英國開採頁岩氣的工程仍處於探索階段，但已在多地發現頁岩氣田，尤以英格蘭北部和南部居多。
