Aretha Franklin, who died on Thursday at age 76 after battling pancreatic cancer, didn’t begin to top the charts until 1967, but Memphis-born singer quickly became known as the “queen” of soul music, a distinctly American musical genre that emerged in the 1950s and combined rock, rhythm and blues, and jazz with the soaring — and occasionally blistering — emotional force of gospel.
