「非洲未來主義」(Afrofuturism)一詞初現於1990年代,但早在1950年代黑人民權運動之初便現雛形。它最早出現於文化評論學者德里(Mark Dery)在1994年論文Black to the Future,該文章訪談非裔美國人作家德倫尼(Samuel R. Delany)和巴特勒(Octavia E. Butler)等及分析其科幻作品,詰問為何在科幻題材中黑人聲音從缺:「當一個社群(指黑人)的過往被蓄意抹去,能量耗用於追索自身歷史痕迹,還能否想像可能的未來?」

Western-centric views of Africa that stereotype and diminish its countries and cultures still abound. Black Panther, however, not only offers an Afrocentric perspective, but one that draws on the rich, layered concept of Afrofuturism, born out of black artists imagining the endless possibilities of new futures.
