另一邊廂，愛爾蘭則希望不會令該國與北愛之間出現「硬邊界」（hard border），影響愛爾蘭與英國的貿易。所謂「硬邊界」，意即要在邊境設立海關徵稅、邊境口岸、檢查站、檢驗檢疫等機構和設施，並配備邊防力量。此舉變相令英國留在歐盟單一市場。
