據中科院雲南天文台科普中心張興祥表示，從拍攝到的影像觀測，這次的流星應該稱為火流星。同屬雲南天文台的研究員王曉彬說，太陽系有大量的小天體，進入地球大氣層時被燒蝕，呈現為明亮的火流星，就能看到非常壯觀的空爆現象。
