「西蘭洲」一詞首先在1995年由美國地質學家陸元迪克提出，其面積達490萬平方公里，大概相當於印度次大陸。西蘭洲於6千萬至8千5百萬年前，跟包圍澳洲的岡瓦那大陸分裂並下沉。
