10間大學校長早前發聯合聲明，譴責濫用言論自由行為，表明不支持港獨，引起外界反響；聲明聯署人之一的港大校長馬斐森日前接受蘇格蘭傳媒訪問時，卻稱從未說過討論港獨是濫用言論自由，有關聲明內容只是針對仇恨言論，又指聲明被不同政治陣營曲解。
