有非洲野生動物保育團體批評，雖然該公約已禁止象牙的國際貿易，但每年仍約有逾3萬隻非洲大象被殺，香港更被指是非法象牙的重要轉運及消費中心，必須積極正視生態滅絕的問題。

Activists particularly in the UK have lobbied the UN to include ecocide as a part of the same international law that deals with genocide and crimes against humanity.
