主角遼寧艦前稱為「瓦良格號」，為服役於前蘇聯海軍的庫茲涅佐夫元帥級航空母艦2號艦，1988年11月25日首度下水。蘇聯瓦解後，中國政府1998年在拍賣中獲得瓦良格號，2002年利用拖船拖回國，2005年遼寧艦在大連造船廠開始進行續建及改造。

The vessel was built using the hull of an unfinished Soviet carrier, the Varyag, which China acquired in 2002. The carrier was commissioned in 2012.
