Three types of government are possible when there is no overall majority: a single-party minority government, which is supported by other parties on an ad-hoc basis; government by formal inter-party agreement, such as the Liberal-Labour pact in 1977-78; or a full-blown coalition government which commands a majority in the House of Commons, such as Mr Cameron’s government of 2010-15.
