有人提出「特朗普主義」一字來形容特朗普的路線，但嚴格來說，它不是什麼政策主張，而是透過譁眾取寵的真人騷方法，去煽動民族主義和反移民情緒。換了在議會民主制度，特朗普的民粹主義路線，通常都是以第三黨的姿態出現，一如近年在歐洲崛起的右翼民粹運動，如法國極右國民陣線、英國獨立黨等。但在美國政治生態下，特朗普的民粹主義卻是在共和黨這個老牌政黨之中異軍突起。
