「後真相政治」（Post-truth politics）字眼2010年由美國自由派博客所創，專指保守派漠視氣候變化事實。英國脫歐公投後，針對脫歐派種種不實宣傳，英國論者亦用上這字眼。《經濟學人》稱，「後真相政治」已成各國政界的新常態。在後真相時代中真相淪為次要，人們不再驗證或質疑政客的言論是否屬實，重要的是「感覺真確」。政客說謊不再是為了瞞騙，而是鞏固目標群眾的偏見，換取共鳴與支持。一旦出現反對聲音，只會加劇己方陣營的敵我對立心態，衍生各種陰謀論，令偏見更難被推翻。

The successful campaign for Britain to leave the European Union warned of the hordes of immigrants that would result from Turkey’s imminent accession to the union.
