事發醫院是五間在8月里約奧運期間治療旅客的指定醫院之一，亦最接近舉行開幕禮的馬拉簡拿球場。美國大使館也向到巴西觀賞奧運的遊客推薦這間醫院。

马拉卡纳球场是里约奥运会东北部场馆群的核心场馆。球场最初为了1950年世界杯比赛而建造，在其后60余年的时间中，曾举办了多场大型赛事，其中包括2007年泛美运动会，2013年联合会杯和2014年世界杯，这使它也成为了为数不多的举办过两届世界杯的球场。
