什麼是「超級黨代表」呢？回到初選制度成立的時候，民主黨一方面有壓力要讓推舉候選人的過程更為透明和民主，同時又擔心初選會被少數極端分子騎劫，便想到 預留一定席次給黨內元老，例如前任總統和副總統、民主黨的國會議員，以及各州民主黨部的主席和副主席等等。他們不同於由個別州份推舉出來的黨代表，不用按 該州選民的意願，而可自由選擇要支持的參選人，必要時可出手以作制衡。
