德國聯邦議會大選周日（9月24日）投票。初步票站調查結果顯示，總理默克爾所屬的基督教民主聯盟（簡稱基民盟，CDU）及姊妹黨基督教社會聯盟（簡稱基社盟，CSU）將繼續成為第一大黨，但得票僅約33%，遜於該黨選前訂下的40%目標，前歐洲議會議長舒爾茨領軍的社民黨（SPD）則排名第二。
