早產嬰多病，港大及瑪麗醫院追蹤近90名早產嬰，發現逾16%出現視網膜病變；如按體重分類，研究發現逾七成體重少於1000克的早產嬰兒有此病變。有參與研究的醫生建議，家長應及早讓早產子女接受篩查，因愈早發現對視網膜的影響愈低。
