As the non-dredging reclamation is a new experience for Hong Kong, the government will appoint an independent expert to conduct a full assessment of the island’s condition for future reference. The report is expected to be completed in six months.

However, as readers of HowardWinnReports will be aware, the non-dredged method at the HKBCF encountered significant technical problems with areas of the artificial island settling at different rates and causing significant movement.

In designing the non-dredged reclamation works, the consultant had considered and anticipated that some settlement and lateral movement of the reclaimed land would occur during the construction stage, and lateral movement on the top of the steel cells was also anticipated during construction.
