正當香港政經環境不明朗之際，長和系合併重組變相遷冊。「超人」李嘉誠旗下兩大上市旗艦長實及和黃將重組合併，分拆地產業務，新公司分別命名為長江和記實業（長和）及長江實業地產（長地），註冊地亦不再選擇香港，轉為傳統的離岸金融中心開曼群島。

As with a few other common law jurisdictions like the Britain and Singapore, Hong Kong does not allow a locally registered firm to change domicile while retaining its locally listed status. Offshore financial hubs such as Cayman Islands and Bermuda offer well-trodden workarounds to bypass the restriction.
