美國在台協會（AIT）是台美1979 年斷交後，美國國務院設置的「民間組織」，職員總共超過450 人，從事各種與美國利益相關的工作，其在台辦事處也辦理與大使館相同的事務，包括核發赴美簽證等，其公務車輛領有外交車牌，相當於美國在台的大使級外交代表機構。AIT 及其駐台辦事處由資深外交官或政界人士擔任理事主席和處長，並由美國國會監督。
