沙士的病徵與非典型肺炎相若，但病因不明，病情反覆，醫學家現時一般相信由冠狀病毒引致，但也有病例是嚴重呼吸道症候，但無法證實病者是受到冠狀病毒感染的，世衞也曾一度考慮「未經診斷的非典型肺炎」（ APWD）這個矛盾詞（未經診斷怎可稱病？）。
