在二○○三年香港爆發沙士，共有一千七百五十五人受感染，二百九十九人死亡，當中包括醫護人員。沙士在港肆虐期間，全港學校須停課，百業蕭條。世界衞生組織更一度發出旅遊警告。

From the first diagnosis in November 2002 until the World Health Organisation declared China Sars-free on May 19, 2004, the disease infected 5,237 people on the mainland, of whom 329 died.
