與以前出現的未入主白宮的政黨在中期選舉中大有斬獲的情形不同，在2014年的選舉中，共和黨候選人既未祭出鮮明的施政綱領，也未圍繞具體的政策問題來競選。取而代之的是，支持他們的選民心中滿含憤恨，卻並未抱有清晰的觀點，遠不及那些讓共和黨在1994年拿下參眾兩院多數黨地位、民主黨2006年奪回國會、共和黨2010年奪取眾議院控制權的那些選民篤定。
