1916年，完全是出于新英格兰人节俭习惯，第一次初选定在“村镇居民会议日”(Town Meeting Day) 同时举行，因为当地人反正要集会。于是，这个日子（3月的第2个星期二）便沿用了半个多世纪，直到1968年，事情已经明朗化，初选从此将完全控制总统候选人提名进程。
