從學聯在9月22日發起大專生罷課一周，到了9日26日學民思潮發動中學生罷課一天，當晚集會臨近結束時，一批學生帶頭攀爬鐵閘進入公民廣場，寓意拒絕「被落閘」，學生要重奪是屬於人民的公民廣場。
