佔中昨凌晨掀起戰幔，三萬人下午湧到添美道周邊街道包圍警察，高叫「釋放學生」。警方向手無寸鐵的群眾施放催淚彈，嗆鼻的煙霧從白天燒至黑夜。示威者短暫撤離後，更多人重返現場，晚上逾六萬人同時佔領銅鑼灣至中環一帶交通要道，午夜時分蔓延至九龍。警方史無前例手持AR15半自動步槍及實彈威嚇和平示威者。佔中倡議人戴耀廷指出現時無人可以終止佔領行動，除非特首梁振英下台。
