正當香港「佔中」運動進行之際，網上廣泛流傳內地負責輿論的宣傳部門下令全國各地數以10萬計俗稱「五毛」的「網絡評論員」，在網絡上向支持「佔中」的香港藝人發動「輿論」攻擊。

不過，在北京對香港的群眾路線佈局中，「幫港出聲」是低層次的先鋒、打手而已，類似中國的五毛、自乾五（自帶乾糧的五毛）；高一級的是擁有紅色頂戴的人大代表、政協委員，以及其他接受西環指揮的公職人員；更高級的則會以中間面目出現，小罵大幫忙，類似中國的民主黨派。
