蘇格蘭要求獨立的要求一直沒有完全停止過。到了近年來，1998年，英國政府公佈《蘇格蘭法案》，蘇格蘭法案就允許成立蘇格蘭議會。蘇格蘭和英格蘭合併成大不列顛聯合王國的時候，蘇格蘭議會就不存在了，完全併到英格蘭。
