中共中央統戰部在事隔11年之後，正式成立第八局，全名為「新的社會階層人士工作局」，將私營企業和外資企業的管理技術人員、中介組織和社會組織從業人員、自由職業人員、新媒體從業人員等納入統戰對象；顯示因應新的形勢，中共統戰層面也在不斷擴大，成為鞏固政權的一個重要手段。

目前統戰部的主要職責，包括處理有關民主黨派、民族宗教、港澳台僑和海外社團、黨外知識分子等工作，並負責開展海外統戰工作。在中共中央26 個直屬機構中，統戰部是排名第四的核心部門，排在前面的分別是中辦、中組部和中宣部。
