中文大學進行全港首個全民肝臟健康普查，發現逾四分一受訪成人患脂肪肝，推算全港超過100萬人患該病，當中四萬人有嚴重纖維化或肝硬化。專家警告，若不及時控制，最終約兩至三成人會死於肝癌或相關併發症，呼籲高血壓、糖尿病等代謝綜合症高危一族要定期檢查肝臟。

Despite the small number, the disease remains a significant public health concern. About one fifth of hepatitis C patients in the city could develop cirrhosis, or scarring of the liver, within 20 years, which can lead to liver cancer.
