水龍捲的前身是漏斗雲，而漏斗雲在香港的夏天相當常見，當太陽的熱力射向水面，受熱後會蒸發成熱氣向上升，形成對流，並夾雜雷暴和雨水，當雲層下方的「漏斗」與水面接觸，便會形成水龍捲。
