海洋守護者協會自2005年起一直阻撓日本在南極捕鯨，但該會創辦人沃森（Paul Watson）昨表示，今年將不會再阻截日本捕鯨船，因日本現在採取軍事偵測，使用衛星實時監察協會船舶的活動，「若他們掌握到我們船舶的位置，就能輕易地避過我們」。
