距離和平佔中6.22全民投票只有十多日，北京再施壓企圖打擊港人投票。前新華社香港分社社長周南接受訪問，除揚言佔中違法外，更抹黑整個運動是反華力量圖謀篡奪政權，恐嚇若發生損害國家利益的動亂，中央會宣佈戒嚴及干預。佔中發起人戴耀廷批評周南言論嚴重抹黑佔中，強調他們只是以公民抗命爭取真普選，「（周南）希望藉此嚇香港人6.22唔好出來投票，唔好參加7.1遊行」。
