學者Paul Simpson將街頭表演定義為「在街上進行的音樂或非音樂表演,以鼓勵途人捐獻作為目標」,在歐洲,街頭藝人最早在中世紀以遊吟詩人(Troubadour)之姿態出現,游走宮廷之間,以詩詞諷刺時弊,鄭曉彤說,類似的活動在香港最早可以追溯到十九世紀,即俗稱「大笪地」,每逢華燈初上,上環海旁填海區一帶一片歌舞昇平:「再來是廟街賣唱,心口碎大石,到旺角繁盛起來,大家便轉移了場地,後來行人專用區開放,開始有人發現,街道上除了行路外,很多事情也可以做。」
