學者Paul Simpson將街頭表演定義為「在街上進行的音樂或非音樂表演，以鼓勵途人捐獻作為目標」，在歐洲，街頭藝人最早在中世紀以遊吟詩人（Troubadour）之姿態出現，游走宮廷之間，以詩詞諷刺時弊，鄭曉彤說，類似的活動在香港最早可以追溯到十九世紀，即俗稱「大笪地」，每逢華燈初上，上環海旁填海區一帶一片歌舞昇平：「再來是廟街賣唱，心口碎大石，到旺角繁盛起來，大家便轉移了場地，後來行人專用區開放，開始有人發現，街道上除了行路外，很多事情也可以做。」
