For the past five years, critics and industry folk have grumbled that the best cinematography Oscar was effectively rendering itself obsolete. As five straight CGI spectacles (four of them in 3D) claimed the prize, all taking best visual effects into the bargain, purists wondered where the line between the awards was to be drawn.
