就在這個時候，以「馬照跑、舞照跳」聞名中外的香港登場。其時，特區政府希望香港能參與這件國際盛事，同時為香港於2009年舉辦東亞運動會提供經驗，而北京奧組委則考慮到每逢賽季中的星期三和星期日，香港都有賽馬活動，處理馬匹經驗豐富，從運輸到檢疫都駕輕就熟，雙方最終達成共識，同意由香港承辦京奧的馬術項目。
