下星期五是耶穌受難節。根據《聖經》記載，當時羅馬帝國駐猶太的總督比拉多（基督教：彼拉多）在猶太人逾越節前夕釋放一位死囚。他給群眾兩個選擇，一位是耶穌，另一位是巴辣巴（基督教：巴拉巴）。群眾選擇釋放巴辣巴，耶穌就死在十字架上。
