在美國，又有另一個名，叫作「回巢族」， 即是「Boomerang Generation」，直譯是「回力棒一代」。Boomerang Generation指年青一代在獨自生活一段期間後，回到父母身邊與他們共同生活，也就是回到了自己的老巢。「回巢族」與父母共同生活的形式可以有多種，可以是像小孩般高度依賴父母的，也可以是高度自主且獨立居住的。

孩子成年後无力自立，继续与父母同住的现象获称“啃老”；独立生活一段後又搬回父母家住的年轻人获称“回巢”。英国国家统计局数据显示，由於经济持续低迷，年轻人失业率高，英国“回巢族”人数上升，2011年为300万。

More than 3.3 million adults between the ages of 20 and 34 were living with parents in 2013, 26% of that age group, according to the Office for National Statistics.

They are known as the boomerang generation, as they often return to live at home after a spell away or at university.
