教育局早前推出諮詢文件，被指要求學生學習簡體字，惹起網民熱議。教育局發言人回應指，自2002年起已提出「學生應掌握認讀簡化字的能力」為課程發展的基本理念之一，在學生掌握繁體字後，可在高中階段「酌量學習一些簡化字」。

In a public consultation document on the renewal of the Chinese language education curriculum for primary and secondary schools, it was mentioned that students should have the ability to read simplified Chinese characters in order to have a wider reading range.
