而在大約10年前開始，街頭運動和議會抗爭有激進化的明顯趨勢。以黃毓民為首的社民連在2008年贏得3個立法會議席，再加上隨後的反高鐵和五區公投運動，都標誌着政治運動激進化的趨勢。近年，更有「本土派」的冒起，激進路線開始與溫和路線分庭抗禮。

Veteran lawmaker Albert Chan Wai-yip of the League of Social Democrats, who has served in the legislature on and off for more than 15 years, said: ‘This government is unjust. Hong Kong citizens like justice and we are putting justice into action with the referendum in five constituencies and all citizens joining this uprising.’
