黃之鋒其後主打教育、中學生議題，有份成立學生組織「學民思潮」任召集人，最為人關注是2012年，他以學民思潮名義多次發起反對設立德育及國民教育獨立成科，舉辦多次遊行集會，狙擊時任教育局局長吳克儉，並號召公眾到政府總部外紮營通宵留守、呼籲學生穿黑衣上學，在十‧一升旗禮示威等，最終當時政府宣布擱置德育及國民教育科課程指引。

In 2012, the proposed implementation of Moral and National Education in primary and secondary schools was scrapped following protests by 120,000 students at the Legislative Council. Opponents said it was a political tool by the government to build a sense of patriotism among local students.
