對猶太教徒而言，聖殿山是昔日猶太人聖殿所處之地；對穆斯林而言，山上圓頂清真寺內的岩石相傳是先知穆罕默德夜行登霄覲見真主的所在，是故耶城也是伊斯蘭教第三聖城，僅次於麥加和麥地那。
