The Human Factor in PSIT / El Factor Humano en TISP

The 7th International Conference on Public Services Interpreting and Translation (PSIT7), with The Human Factor in PSIT theme, will be held in the context of these premises at the University of Alcalá (Madrid) on 26th and 27th March 2020. The main objective of this seventh edition of the conference is to continue with dialogue and the exchange of projects and experiences on PSIT carried out in previous meetings.T&I professionals, researchers, educational authorities and public and private institutions, linguistic service providers or anyone interested in making our world more sustainable are invited to participate. Proposals are encouraged to focus on PSIT and to specially apply to any of the following areas of study:

• PSIT and its relationship with the socio-political and economic environment
• Intercultural and interlinguistic mediation
• Multiculturalism and multilingualism
• Linguistic resources and migrant population in the European Union
• Technological advances in PSIT
• Curriculum design and training in PSIT in humanitarian settings
• T & I in/with indigenous language/lesser used languages
• Language policies in African communities
• PSIT as a tool/strategy/way to favor inclusion in society

The received proposals will be subject to an anonymous peer review process in order to ensure the quality of the accepted proposals. The congress will have seminars dedicated to the practical aspects applied to PSIT, as well as plenary lectures and round tables. The duration of the papers will be 20 minutes, followed by 10 minutes of debate. The round table proposals must include a title and general description and the titles and summary of at least three contributions and will have one hour and thirty minutes. The preferred conference languages will be Spanish and English. Important dates:

Translating and Interpreting Political Discourse – HKBU

19-20 June, 2019 Hong Kong Baptist University Call for Papers In this globalised and digitalised era, the translation and interpreting of political discourse has become an increasingly important area of research that presents a number of challenges. These include the sensitiveness of the subject matter involved, the interdisciplinary nature of the field, and the particular cognitive or pragmatic constraints that pertain in the political translation/interpreting process. Apart from its practical implications for political science and communication studies, research in this field helps us to further reflect on issues such as the voice of the translator or interpreter, translatorial intervention, and the ethical dimensions of political translation and interpreting. This two-day conference, organised in association with Bandung: Journal of the Global South, serves as a platform for interdisciplinary exchange on the latest research in this area. The organisers welcome contributions addressing any aspect of the translation/interpreting of political discourse. Suggested themes include but are not restricted to: − The interface between translation/interpreting and political discourse: new trends and methods in research; − The roles of translators/interpreters in translating and interpreting political discourse; − Cognitive or pragmatic constraints in the translation/interpreting of political texts (such as policy speeches/statements, parliamentary debates, press conferences, media interviews with politicians or political talks/meetings on TV); − Corpus-based study of political and policy speeches and their translation/interpreting: new tools and paradigms; − Ethical issues in political translation and interpreting; − The use of Critical Discourse Analysis and other tools for translation/interpreting discourse analysis; − Frameworks and methods of corpora construction in the study of translated/interpreted political texts; − Political censorship in the production and circulation of translated texts. The conference will also feature two workshops related to the subthemes. It is hoped that through this conference, participants can gain inspiration from scholars of different disciplines and build up platforms for future collaboration and discussion. Refreshments will be served. Book description This book explores a unique courtroom in the common-law jurisdiction. This uniqueness is particularly characterised by the use of English as the trial language in a predominantly Cantonese-speaking society and the presence of court actors who are proficient in both languages. This scenario poses specific challenges to the interpreters who work within it, and at times renders the interpretation service superfluous. This study, inter alia, problematises judges’ intervention in court proceedings, Chinese witnesses testifying in English, as well as English-language trials heard by Chinese jurors. It demonstrates how the use of chuchotage can be inadequate and inappropriate in the Hong Kong courtroom, where interpreting in an English-language trial is catering to the needs of the linguistic majority. This book is valuable for interpreters, language educators, legal professionals, forensic linguists and policy makers alike. Dr Eva Ng is Assistant Professor of the Translation Programme in the School of Chinese, HKU. She previously served in the Judiciary of Hong Kong as a court interpreter, and has researched extensively in courtroom interpreting and forensic linguistics. Her works have appeared in the International Journal of Speech, Language and the Law, International Journal for the Semiotics of Law, Language and Law, International Journal of Interpreter Education and other leading journals. NZSTI Annual Conference 2018

WELLINGTON, NEW ZEALAND, 26-27 MAY 2018 Communication and Superdiversity Translators and interpreters are unique conduits facilitating the free flow of communications between peoples and nations in today’s challenging and most exciting superdiverse environment. The contexts and conditions in which peoples and individuals interact and communicate now are very different from those of the past. Through translation and interpreting we engage with the contemporary social changes associated with superdiversity. This presents us with both new opportunities and new challenges. Translators and interpreters can be most important contributors to a healthier and happier superdiverse human eco-system. At its 2018 Annual Conference in Wellington, the New Zealand Society of Translators and Interpreters wishes to explore various facets of communicating through translation and interpreting in today’s superdiverse environment: practical, technical, theoretical, philosophical or ethical and other aspects, together with opportunities and challenges. The conference audience will be multilingual and consist of practitioners and academics, veterans and newcomers to the field. Translating the Dialect of the Tribe: Language and Identity in Sinophone Bai Writing

Abstract

How can minority writers within China assert their own linguistic individualism whilst also writing in Chinese? Ethnic minority works which deal with local culture, including customs, rituals and traditional legends, can generally be divided into two groups: writing in standard Chinese, and works that are composed in native scripts. Most ethnic minority writing that can go beyond the local level to connect with a national or even global audience is published in Chinese – hence the label Sinophone writing. The subject of this seminar, the Bai people, are one such minority nationality within China, who live in and around the city of Dali in ethnically-diverse Yunnan Province. The Bai have their own language, sometimes classed as belonging to the Yi branch of Tibeto-Burman, and have been living in the region for thousands of years. Nevertheless, they are often cited as one of the most 'Sinicised' of China's ethnic groups. This means that the Bai are caught between two linguistic and cultural worlds: somewhere between Sinitic and Lolo-Burmese, a situation that is reflected in their writing. As they write in Chinese, they inevitably translate their own language and culture, inserting non-Chinese words and cultural context into the Chinese text. In this case, their native language is the 'source' language that is self-translated. This seminar investigates how Sinophone Bai authors use Chinese to reflect their own identity, employing translation to challenge a homogenized notion of 'Chineseness' in their writing. They do this by inserting Bai language into Chinese writing via various transformational strategies, such as glossing and the use of untranslated words, making Sinophone minority writers authors of translational texts and cultural translators in their own right. About the Speaker

Duncan Poupard is Assistant Professor in the Department of Translation at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. His work focuses on the translations of Chinese ethnic minority texts, particularly those of the Naxi minority, and he has worked with museums and research groups around the world, including the British Library and the Barcelona Museum of World Cultures. His academic articles have appeared in journals such as Neohelicon and the Journal of Modern Literature in Chinese.

Every three years, the International Federation of Translators FIT (Fédération Internationale des Traducteurs) holds its flagship industry event choosing a different international host each time. Following successful events in Shanghai in 2008, San Francisco in 2011, and the hugely successful XX FIT World Congress 2014 in Berlin, FIT is pleased to have the Australian Institute of Interpreters and Translators as its hosts for 2017. The XXI FIT World Congress will take place in Brisbane, Australia from 3 – 5 August 2017.
