柴達木盆地位於青藏高原腹地，是中國三大內陸盆地之一，面積約24萬平方公里，主要分佈在青海省海西蒙古族藏族自治州。盆地內氣候乾旱、寒冷、多風，沙漠化土地總面積1.42億畝，是中國沙化土地分佈海拔最高的地區。
